Dave learnt to swim whilst at Ferndale Junior School in Swindon. He did go and watch a Swindon Dolphin training session at Milton Road but decided that the work involved was not for him!
His first involvement with Wiltshire swimming was in 1965, as a 12 year, old when Commonweal school entered the Invitational Schools Team Competition at Devizes. This was not a great success as the team went from 2nd to last place when the final swimmer nearly lost his shorts and completed the race one handed, holding his shorts up with the other.
Enough of competitive swimming, Dave then only got involved with sub-aqua and lifesaving.
In 1990 Dave joined Wroughton ASC when he brought both his daughters to the club. A good deal for us, as in one fell swoop we ultimately gained – 2 team swimmers who went on to take L2 Teachers and National Timekeeper; Teacher and Coach for 21 years; Treasurer for 25 years, 2 team managers; Registration Secretary, Welfare Officer and National Referee for swimming and para-swimming.
As well as working extensively for the club Dave passed as a National Timekeeper in 1996 and Referee in 2001. In 2004 he started to get involved with the IPC passing as Referee in 2006. He has since attended many National events and was very proud to be invited to officiate at the London 2012 Paralympics and World IPC Championships at Glasgow.
In 2006 he took on the role as Secretary to the County Officials Panel, a job he retains 12 years later.
As in all he takes on, this is delivered quietly, with much expertise and with total support to those around him. The day he joined Wroughton 27 years ago, delivered so much for club, county, right through to the National scene. As a Club we are delighted that Dave is Wiltshire President for 2018 and we hope that both him and Jane have an enjoyable year in office.
